“Father Jay Matthews, rector of Cathedral of Christ the Light, passed away to eternal life.  Father Matthews’ infectious love for his faith, his parishioners and his community was a source of joy and inspiration for me. He truly lived what St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests, described the priesthood to be: "the love of the heart of Jesus." I shall really miss him.  Please hold his family, the Cathedral parishioners and all of us who knew and loved Fr. Jay in your prayers.”     Bishop Michael Barber

“It is a joy to be a part of the family of The Cathedral of Christ the Light. As a community of faith, made up of people and cultures that enrich our diocese, we strive to be a vibrant sign of God’s presence in the city of Oakland and all the cities within Alameda and Contra Costa counties.  Our cathedral was built for the greater glory and honor of God so that all people may experience the loving embrace of God.  May your visit draw you more deeply into the radiance of Christ’s light, and may you feel at home in His presence."   Very Rev. Jay Matthews
