Arrangements of African American Spirituals by the greats, including:

Moses Hogan Abide With MeWade in the Water, & Walk Together, Children

Jester Hairston Elijah Rock

William Dawson Ezekiel Saw de Wheel

Alice Parker Hush! Somebody’s Callin’ My Name

Works by Italian composers, including:

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Super flumina, Babylonis & Sicut cervus

Alessandro Scarlatti Exaltabo te in Domine

Gioachino Rossini O salutaris hostia

Choral favorites, including:

Igor Stravinsky Pater noster

Anton Bruckner Locus iste

African American spirituals date back to 1600’s colonial America, making them contemporaneous with well-known European choral works. Tonight’s concert interlaces the music by theme, showing the Spirituals next to other works exploring similar religious topics such as: spiritual longing, the importance of water, and vigorous praise of God.
